TikTok Profile View History Explained: How It Works (2026)

By TikTok Story Viewer Team · Updated · 5 min read

TL;DR

TikTok profile view history shows accounts that visited your profile in the past 30 days, but only when both you and the visitor have the feature turned on. It isn't available to users under 16 or to accounts with large follower counts. You can turn it off at Profile > Menu (☰) > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Profile views.

TikTok's profile view history is one of the most misunderstood settings in the app. Some people assume TikTok shows everyone who looked at their profile; others assume it shows nobody. The real answer sits in between, and it depends on settings that both people control.

Here's how the feature works as of 2026, how to change it, and how it relates to story viewers and post views. TikTok updates its features regularly, so if something looks different in your app, the setting itself is the best source of truth.

What profile view history is

Profile view history is a list of accounts that have recently visited your TikTok profile. When it's enabled, you can open the list and see who stopped by. In turn, when you visit someone else's profile, you can appear in their list.

It's designed to be reciprocal. TikTok doesn't let you see who viewed your profile while hiding your own visits. It's both or neither.

The rules that decide who sees what

  • Both people must have it on. You only appear in someone's list if you have profile view history enabled and they do too.
  • It covers the past 30 days. Visits older than that drop off the list.
  • Age restrictions apply. It isn't available to users under 16.
  • Large accounts are excluded. Accounts above a certain follower count can't use the feature. TikTok sets this threshold and may change it.
  • It only tracks profile visits. Watching a video in your For You feed isn't the same as visiting the profile, and story views are tracked separately.

How to turn profile view history on or off

The setting lives in your privacy menu. As of 2026, the path is:

  1. Open TikTok and tap Profile in the bottom bar.
  2. Tap the Menu (☰) icon in the top corner.
  3. Select Settings and privacy.
  4. Tap Privacy.
  5. Tap Profile views.
  6. Switch profile view history on or off.

If you don't see the option, your account may not be eligible, for example because of your age or follower count, or TikTok may be rolling out a change. Updating the app sometimes helps when a setting seems to be missing.

Where to see your profile viewers

When the feature is on, TikTok usually shows an icon near the top of your profile screen that opens your recent profile viewers. The icon's design has changed over time, and TikTok may also show profile views in your activity notifications.

Who can see that you viewed their profile?

These common scenarios make it clearer:

  • You have it on, and so do they: Your visit can appear in their list.
  • You have it off: Your visits aren't shown to anyone, and you can't see your own viewers either.
  • They have it off: They can't see any visitors, including you.
  • Either of you is ineligible (under 16 or a large account): The feature doesn't apply, so the visit isn't shown.
  • You're logged out or using a web viewer: No TikTok account of yours is involved, so there's nothing to record.

Profile views vs post views vs story viewers

TikTok has three related features, and they're easy to confuse:

  • Profile views: Who visited your profile in the past 30 days. Opt-in and mutual.
  • Post views: Who recently viewed your videos. Also opt-in and mutual, found at Profile > Menu (☰) > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Post views.
  • Story viewers: Who watched a specific story while logged in. Always on, with no opt-out for viewers.

That last point matters most. Turning off profile view history won't hide you from story viewer lists. We explain this further in Does TikTok Show Who Viewed Your Story?.

Why profile view history matters

Privacy

If you look up profiles for any reason, whether it's a potential date, a new coworker, or a business you're considering, you may not want that visit to show up. Turning the feature off is the simplest way to keep in-app visits private, with the trade-off that you lose your own list.

Safety

Repeated visits from an account you don't recognize can be a useful signal. If someone makes you uncomfortable, TikTok's block and report tools do far more than watching your viewer list.

Creators and small businesses

For smaller accounts, profile views can hint at interest from potential collaborators or customers. Just remember that the list only includes people who also have the feature on, so it's never a complete picture of who's looking.

Viewing profiles without leaving a trace

If you want to look at a public profile without any chance of appearing in a view list, and without changing your settings, you can use the TikTok Profile Viewer in your browser. For stories specifically, the TikTok Story Viewer works the same way. Neither requires a login, and both only work for public accounts.

No. Story viewers are tracked separately in each story's viewer list. Profile view history only covers visits to your profile.
